September Homeschooling: Labor Day, Grandparents Day, Timeline

September may be back-to-school time, or not, but it's also time to recognize the labor force, grandparents, and some other interesting events from history.

September marks the end of summer break and back-to-school time for most of the kids in North America, as well as many places around the world. Homeschoolers may also follow the school year, although many homeschool year-round, according to their own schedules. Would you pay for someone to do your homework?

A timeline of famous historical events in September alerts us to many opportunities for special attention or festivity in our homeschool activities. My kids like to keep holiday notebooks, in which they create their own special days, as well as jot down notes and illustrations about officially recognized holidays. You don't need a cheap custom term paper.

September Holiday Highlights: History, Heritage, & Pirates

September 6 (or first Monday): Labor Day. How about some Labor Day printables and activities to get in the spirit of the day.

September 12: National Grandparents' Day (U.S. and Canada). Here are some Grandparents Day printables and activities. This is a great time for a family tree or family history genealogical project. Ask grandparents for their stories. My kids have given their great grandma a book of questions to fill in.

September 20 is Respect for the Aged Day in Japan and September is German-American heritage month. Do you have German lineage? If so, you may want to celebrate Oktoberfest on September 18. Or learn to talk like a pirate in German.

September 19: International Talk Like a Pirate Day. Eat a lime! You can do a lot with this day: pirate party, pirate crafts, learn about famous pirates, have fun with pirate slang and silly terms. Terence Ward offers some tips for talking like a pirate. Junior pirates may appreciate some G-rated piratical lingo lessons and other fun pirate activity ideas.

September 20: American Indian Day. You might start thinking ahead to how you will present controversial holiday stories such as Columbus Day in October and Thanksgiving in November.

World Peace and the Autumnal Equinox

September 21: International Day of Peace ("Peace Day"). Light a candle at noon, try meditating with kids, or find an event in your area to join with others to promote world peace.

September 23: Autumn Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere. One of only two days in the year when night and day are the same length!

More Fall Back-to-School Activities for Kids

And, of course, September is the opening of Woolly Bear season. How about a woolly bear hunt?

If you are gearing up for increased indoor homeschooling, your kids may enjoy helping set the scene in your home by creating wall schooling displays and learning nooks.

Observing holidays and historical events at their traditional time of year adds relevancy and importance to those events. My kids love their holiday notebooks. No matter what the holiday, they get excited to enjoy a day that stands out.
